“Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery” Revisits Norbert’s Great Escape With a July 29 Special Preview

Hagrid never was much good at keeping a secret, least of all a dragon-sized one.

Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is reopening one of the first book’s best bits of mischief. On July 29, developer Jam City rolls out the “Norbert’s Transport” Beyond Special Preview, putting players alongside Hagrid and his very illegally hatched Norwegian Ridgeback.

The setup will be familiar to anyone who has read Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Norbert is growing fast, he is absolutely not allowed, and he needs to be off the grounds before somebody notices. In the game’s telling, Charlie Weasley gets word from his younger brother Ron that Hagrid is hiding a dragon in his hut, and it falls to your character to get Norbert up to the Astronomy Tower and away to the Dragon Sanctuary unseen — the same night Harry, Hermione and Neville earn themselves detention in the Forbidden Forest.

What this actually is

A few outlets are billing this as a brand-new adventure. It is worth being precise, because Jam City’s own wording is narrower: this is a Beyond Special Preview, a window into the game’s post-graduation Beyond Hogwarts storyline rather than a fresh release. Norbert’s Transport already exists as a special adventure for players who have reached Beyond Hogwarts Volume 1, Chapter 14, and it previously ran as a limited-time quest back in 2024.

That does not make it less worth playing. It does mean the honest framing is a re-run being opened up as a shop window: if you have never pushed past graduation, July 29 is your look at what is waiting on the other side.

Where it fits in the Summer of Mystery

The preview is one beat in a month-long anniversary run marking 25 years of the first novel:

  • Summer of Mystery event — began July 1, revisiting moments from Harry’s first year
  • “School of Witchcraft & Wizardry” Mini Hogwarts Diary — reveal images of first-year locations and characters to unlock rewards and a bonus item
  • 3-Week Community Challenge — started July 8, House Points unlocking escalating rewards for every player
  • “25 Years of Magic” Sweepstakes — July 24 through July 31, with prizes from HarryPotter.com
  • “Norbert’s Transport” Beyond Special Preview — July 29
  • Harry’s birthday, July 31 — a new in-game outfit giveaway, leading into Back to Hogwarts on September 1

Jam City has also promised three further special adventures, describing stories that run “from uncovering secrets that challenge the boundaries between the wizarding and Muggle worlds, to helping a beloved Hogwarts professor prepare for a new school year, and embarking on a thrilling dragon-filled journey.” The last of those sounds a lot like it shares a postcode with Norbert.

The timing is doing some quiet work, too. HBO’s series premieres on December 25 and adapts this exact book, so a Norbert refresher lands at a useful moment for anyone planning to arrive at the premiere with the details fresh.
