John Lithgow Tells Daniel Radcliffe the HBO ‘Harry Potter’ Series Is ‘All Going Well’
Accio good news! One of the original trio has heard from inside the new Hogwarts — and the word is encouraging.
Speaking to PEOPLE on the red carpet at the 79th Tony Awards on Sunday, June 7, Daniel Radcliffe shared a rare update on HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series, courtesy of the man stepping into Dumbledore’s robes: John Lithgow. The two were nominated in the same category this year — Radcliffe for Every Brilliant Thing, Lithgow for Giant — and caught up backstage after Lithgow won Best Actor in a Play, his third career Tony, for playing Roald Dahl.
Radcliffe, who’d seen Lithgow’s show earlier that week, said the pair didn’t get into specifics about the adaptation. But the takeaway was warm: Lithgow told him about “how well it’s going and how fond he is of the kids.” Radcliffe added that it was sweet to hear, and reassuring to know the production is on track.
It’s a small but meaningful vote of confidence from the franchise’s most famous alum as the series films its first season.
Where things stand:
- Series status: Season 1, based on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, is currently in production
- New trio: Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), and Alastair Stout (Ron)
- Dumbledore: John Lithgow, following Richard Harris and Michael Gambon
- Format: HBO is adapting the books across multiple seasons, roughly a book per season
- Premiere: Expected in 2026
