Trelawney Star Emma Thompson Says Talking About Harry Potter Feels ‘Strange’
Sybill Trelawney could read the future in tea leaves and crystal balls — but Emma Thompson says her own time in the wizarding world was far shorter than most fans might guess.
Speaking on the Smartless podcast with hosts Jason Bateman, Will Arnett and Sean Hayes, the Oscar-winning actress reflected on playing Hogwarts’ eccentric Divination professor. Thompson, 67, estimated that across her whole career she has spent only “about 30 days on Harry Potter in my whole life,” which makes the films a slightly odd thing to be asked about given how enormous the phenomenon became.
Thompson played Professor Trelawney in three of the eight films, starting with 2004’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and returning for Order of the Phoenix and Deathly Hallows – Part 2. She admitted she sometimes felt almost peripheral to the saga, even wondering aloud whether she was in a different movie from everyone else.
When Sean Hayes praised the character’s thick, coke-bottle glasses and frazzled, neurotic energy, Thompson pointed straight back to the source material, noting that Trelawney’s near-blindness and nervous nature are written into the books. On her approach to acting, she said you simply have to “fling yourself into it” and trust your instincts.
She also spoke warmly about making films for young people, describing children as a “sacred audience” because a movie may be their very first experience of cinema.
Thompson won’t be returning for the new HBO series, but as a fresh generation prepares to meet Trelawney on Christmas Day 2026, her brief yet unforgettable turn remains part of the films’ legacy.
