A Fan Turned a reMarkable Tablet Into Tom Riddle’s Actual Diary Using AI
A magical diary that talks back has basically been built in real life — just don’t expect Warner Bros. to take any credit for it.
Developer Maxime Rivest has modified a reMarkable Paper Pro e-ink tablet into a working recreation of Tom Riddle’s diary from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Handwritten notes are captured by the tablet and sent to a vision-enabled AI model, then fade from the page — much like they did when Harry first wrote to Riddle — before a reply appears back on the display in animated handwriting.
The project runs on Anthropic’s Fable 5 model to generate Riddle-style responses, with support for other OpenAI-compatible AI backends as well. According to Rivest’s GitHub page, replies begin appearing in roughly one second, with the handwriting animation starting before the AI has even finished generating its full response.
Worth being clear that this is a personal, open-source build, not an official Warner Bros. or reMarkable product — setting it up requires putting the tablet into developer mode, not a simple plug-and-play install. Still, it’s picked up plenty of attention online, with clips of the “disappearing ink” effect circulating widely among reMarkable owners and Harry Potter fans alike.
