HBO Brightens Up Hogwarts: “Harry Potter” Series Footage Gets a Warmer Look After Fan Backlash
Lumos. It turns out someone at HBO was listening — and they’ve turned the lights up at Hogwarts.
When HBO dropped the first teaser for its new Harry Potter series back in March, the reaction was split. The craft was there, but a loud chunk of the fandom felt the footage looked cold and desaturated — “washed out” and “drained of colour” compared with the cosy warmth of Chris Columbus’s 2001 film. That criticism clearly landed.

In a new “The Best Is Yet to Come” promo reel — which aired ahead of House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 7 — HBO slipped in revamped Harry Potter footage with a noticeably brighter, warmer colour grade. Hogwarts’ corridors now glow rather than lurk, and the Great Hall sequence in particular has been re-lit, warmer light spilling across the chandeliers. Shots of Harry, Ron and Hermione have been lifted out of that blue-grey murk so more of the detail reads on screen.

One honest note: this is a colour and lighting change, not a re-shoot. There are no new scenes and no recasting — despite a few louder headlines suggesting otherwise. What’s changed is the grade, and it reads as HBO responding directly to the feedback.
