It’s Me: Lambert Wilson Confirms He’s Playing Nicolas Flamel in HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series
Some secrets are harder to keep than the Philosopher’s Stone itself. Veteran French actor Lambert Wilson — known to Muggles for The Matrix Reloaded, Of Gods and Men, and Sahara — has confirmed he’s playing Nicolas Flamel in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
The slip came during a recent appearance on France 2’s morning show Télématin. Shown set photos that had already been circulating online, Wilson admitted “C’est moi” — it’s me — while pointing out he wasn’t supposed to say a word about the project.
For the uninitiated, Flamel is the legendary alchemist who created the Philosopher’s Stone and serves as a key ally of Dumbledore. He’s also the only Harry Potter character drawn from a real historical figure — the actual Nicolas Flamel lived in Paris, where the city’s oldest surviving house still bears his name. Wilson, 67, was previously spotted filming in Cornwall last autumn, transformed by long white hair and a flowing beard.
Wilson has since added colour to the picture. In a newer appearance on France 2’s C à vous, he confirmed he won’t be playing Flamel alone: Swiss actress Marthe Keller plays his wife, Perenelle, the pair — by his telling — married some 600 years. Together, he said, the Flamels brew the elixir of eternal life from the Philosopher’s Stone.
He was also disarmingly candid about going in cold. Neither he nor Keller knew the Wizarding World at all, Wilson admitted, recalling that he turned to the director mid-scene and asked, “What on earth is Hogwarts?”
And while the series is built to run for roughly a decade, Wilson hinted his own stretch will be shorter. Asked whether he was signed on for ten years of filming, he said no — then added that he couldn’t say why.
One thing to flag: everything here comes from Wilson’s own television interviews rather than a formal HBO announcement — the studio still hasn’t listed him or Keller in its official cast. Treat the finer details as the actor’s own words until HBO confirms them.
Where things stand:
- The role: Nicolas Flamel, alchemist and creator of the Philosopher’s Stone
- The confirmation: Wilson acknowledged it himself; HBO hasn’t made it official
- Co-star: Marthe Keller as Perenelle, who Wilson says brews the elixir of life with Flamel
- His run: not the full ~decade — Wilson hinted he won’t film all ten years
- Premiere: December 25, 2026 on HBO Max
- Behind the camera: showrunner Francesca Gardiner, director Mark Mylod
