John Lithgow Says HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Turns One Book Into Eight Hours of Story

On the Tony Awards red carpet, CBS Mornings asked John Lithgow to name his favorite Harry Potter book. Instead, the new Albus Dumbledore revealed just how much room the adaptation has: Season 1 will tell the story of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone across eight episodes — roughly eight hours, compared with the original film’s two.
That’s the headline for fans: four times the screen time to cover Book 1. As Lithgow put it, “we have eight hours. There’s much more storytelling to do.”
He added that the extra time lets the show wander down the smaller side-paths and subplots woven through the books that the movies trimmed for time, and he expects that to hold true across the next several seasons. It’s the kind of breathing room the films never had — and a strong signal the series is leaning into book-faithful detail.
Lithgow also mentioned that filming has officially wrapped on the first season, keeping the show on track for its Christmas debut.
