Kit Harington Said Yes to ‘Harry Potter’ Instantly
Gilderoy Lockhart would be thrilled to learn he is only a tiny step away from an actual heartthrob.
Kit Harington has given his fullest account yet of how he ended up as Hogwarts’ least qualified Defence Against the Dark Arts professor, speaking to Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
He had already decided the show was a good idea before anyone rang. A series, he reasoned, could delve into the books further than the films did, and he said he was “fully supportive” of it. So when the offer actually landed, his answer was a very simple “Yes, please!”
The books are a nightly fixture for him. Harington told Horowitz he falls asleep to Stephen Fry’s audiobook recordings because his brain refuses to switch off at night — a neat bit of symmetry, given he voiced Lockhart himself for Audible’s new full-cast editions.
As for playing the man, he joked that it “wasn’t hard.” Lockhart is “addicted to himself,” Harington said — and sits “just a tiny step to my left.”
Season 2 is already filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, and he is deep enough in to be discussing his costume, though he would say almost nothing about it beyond calling the production intensely secretive. The location matters to him personally: it shoots down the road from home, so he gets to be a dad and play in a world he loves at the same time. He also settled the important question — Gryffindor, obviously.
