Nick Frost Says Some Fans Won’t Like His Take on Hagrid
“You’re a wizard, Harry” — and before long, it’ll be Nick Frost saying those famous words. The actor stepping into the role of Rubeus Hagrid for HBO’s Harry Potter series has opened up about how he’s approaching Hogwarts’ beloved gamekeeper, and he isn’t pretending it’ll please everyone.
Speaking to The Times, Frost said his starting point was the late Robbie Coltrane, who played Hagrid across all eight original films before his death in 2022. Frost wants to honor what Coltrane built — but with eight hours of screen time per season, compared with Coltrane’s roughly two and a half hours per movie, he has room to add new shades. His Hagrid, he revealed, hails from Bristol and is gentle and a little quiet.
Coltrane wasn’t his only inspiration. Frost also pointed to his late uncle, who he said never fully grew up after a childhood bout of scarlet fever in the 1950s, and to Michael Clarke Duncan’s performance as John Coffey in The Green Mile — the towering yet childlike heart of Stephen King’s story.
Frost knows the recasting is sensitive. He expects some longtime fans to respond with “Not my Hagrid,” and says he’s made peace with that. For a fandom fiercely protective of its original cast, it’s a refreshingly honest way to step into giant-sized boots.
Where things stand:
- Premiere: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone arrives on HBO Max on December 25, 2026
- The plan: seven seasons over roughly a decade, adapting one book per season
- Season 2: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is already renewed, with filming set for Leavesden this fall
- Young leads: Dominic McLaughlin (Harry), Arabella Stanton (Hermione), and Alastair Stout (Ron)
- Adult cast so far: John Lithgow (Dumbledore), Janet McTeer (McGonagall), Paapa Essiedu (Snape), Nick Frost (Hagrid), Paul Whitehouse (Filch), Johnny Flynn (Lucius Malfoy), and Peter Serafinowicz (Peeves)
