Ralph Fiennes Says His Voldemort Days Are ‘Done’ as Rupert Grint Weighs In on HBO’s Trailer
He Who Must Not Be Named has hung up the robes for good. Ralph Fiennes used a fan convention panel in Paris last weekend to give his firmest answer yet on whether he’d ever play Lord Voldemort again.
Asked about returning to the role, whether in HBO’s series or on stage, Fiennes described the Harry Potter parts as life-defining and said the idea of repeating one felt odd to him, adding that nobody had actually asked. He wished the new cast well as they start the story over for television, then closed the book: “So, no, I think it’s done, and I loved doing it.”
That lines up with what he told BBC viewers back in April, when he said he thought the ship had sailed. HBO still hasn’t announced who will play its adult Voldemort.
Rupert Grint’s Verdict on the Trailer
Fiennes shared the stage with a group of fellow alumni, including Rupert Grint, James and Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Matthew Lewis, Adrian Rawlins, Christian Coulson and Robbie Jarvis.
During the Weasley family panel, the cast was asked about HBO’s new trailer, which dropped September 2. Grint was the only one who’d watched it, and his review was short and warm: “I think it looks good.” He admitted it’s disorienting, since the films don’t feel that long ago to him, and said that seeing new actors in the roles is naturally strange for the original cast, but that he wishes them all the best.
Grint also mentioned Alastair Stout, HBO’s new Ron, whom he previously wrote a letter to as a way of passing the baton. And he isn’t done with Ron himself: Grint is returning to the role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway early next year.
HBO’s Harry Potter premieres on Christmas Day on HBO and HBO Max.
