Rupert Grint Joins “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” on Broadway for a 17-Week Run as Ron
Dusting off the old robes, indeed. Rupert Grint is returning to Ron Weasley — this time on a Broadway stage. Grint will play the grown-up Ron in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at New York’s Lyric Theatre for a strictly limited 17-week run, beginning Tuesday, February 2, 2027 and continuing through Sunday, May 30, 2027.
The news arrived the way a lot of Wizarding World news does now — with a wink on Instagram. Grint posted a short video of a Cursed Child playbill, captioned “Dusting off the old robes. New York- See you all in February.” The show’s official account followed with the full confirmation, showing off Ron’s knitted sweater and a script cover with Grint’s name on it.
What Grint Said About Coming Back
In a statement released with the announcement, Grint framed the return as a full-circle moment:
“Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting. The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off.”
Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender said Grint’s performance across the eight films defined for a generation what loyal, brave friendship looks like, and described his arrival at the Lyric as a bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the one Cursed Child carries forward. It is also Grint’s first Broadway role since It’s Only a Play in 2014.
The Second Film Star to Walk Onstage
Grint follows Tom Felton, whose return as Draco Malfoy gave the Broadway production a serious box-office jolt. The two will not share the stage: Felton’s run is scheduled to end Sunday, January 3, 2027, a month before Grint steps in. Daniel Fredrick currently plays Ron in a company that also includes John Skelley as Harry Potter, Rachel Christopher as Hermione Granger, Emmet Smith as Albus Potter, Aidan Close as Scorpius Malfoy, Trish Lindstrom as Ginny Potter, Kristen Martin as Delphi Diggory and Janae Hammond as Rose Granger-Weasley.
